Christmas seals are classified as labels or cinderella stamps, they are decorative and serve no postal purpose. Christmas seals are created and sold to raise funds by various charities around the world. The first Christmas seal was developed in Denmark in 1904 and 6 years later (in 1910) the Filipino Christmas seal was released. Between 1910 and 1947 releases were sporadic and became annual from 1947 onwards. In 1986 se-tenant sheets replaced the individual Christmas seals and continue to be released annually.
In the Philippines (as in many other countries) the sale of Christmas seals funds anti-tuberculosis programs. Therefore all Christmas seals will feature the Cross of Lorraine (usually printed in red); the internationally recognized symbol for the fight against T.B. The Philippine Tuberculosis Society (PTS) relies on the sale of Christmas seals as a significant source of their funding. It might also come as a surprise to you that not all Christmas seals have a Christmas theme.
While PTS seals are considered the official Christmas Seal of the Philippines, other seals have been printed over time. For example the Foundation for the Rehabilitation and Prevention of Blindness in the Philippines (FRPBP) has produced Charity stamps in the past (which some collectors have mistaken for official Christmas seals). FRPBP stamps can usually be identified by a logo with a butterfly in a dotted circle instead of the Cross of Lorraine and they are often of a lesser quality than the official Christmas seals of the PTS.
Other items often seen (and more widely accepted) in Christmas seal collections are the Elizade Christmas Seals. The Elizade & Co. company produced it’s own Christmas seals in 1940 and 1941 and gave them away for free to the public. They produced only 20,000 of each stamp. The 1940 design was created by Cesar F. Legaspi, a Filipino national artist.
In addition to Elizade, Rotary (1971), Mobile Oil and Tanduay have also released Christmas seals in the past – all of which are now very hard to come by. Even scarcer is a 1946 yellow Christmas Seal that appeared unannounced and has not been acknowledged by the TBS – it’s source is still unclear.
