1939 continues the “COMMONWEALTH” overprints again, though in a smaller font than was used in 1936. 2 airmail stamps (c57a, c57) were both overprinted and surcharged to commemorate the First Airmail Exhibition this year. 4 stamps were released in the “Foreign Trade Week” series – all of which were overprinted and surcharged. 2 sets of stamps were released to commemorate the 4th anniversary of national independence, the first depicting the Commonwealth Triumphal Arch, the second set depicting the Malacanan Palace. A single special delivery stamp (PH e7) was released this year along with a booklet containing 24 postage stamps (PH 433) – 6 per pane.

PH C57 and C57a are very similar stamps and are often mixed up if not viewed next to each other. C57a is harder to find and is in a slightly darker shade of green.
